Strobe (Exhibition)

Kevin Tran made his solo debut in 2009, circled the globe (exhibiting all over Austalia, Hong Kong and California) and by March 2010 was granted an artist-in-residency at Newington Armory Studios, which is where he created his most recent body of work, Strobe.

Tran’s retrospective glimpse at music festivals, inspired by vivid colours and the pulsing symphony of nocturnal light shows, gets us itching for an endless summer.

Shane Cotton: Smashed Myth

Trouble’s brewing in Shane Cotton’s Smashed Myth. In just over 40 square metres of canvas, Cotton (the renowned Maori artist of, most recently, Biennale of Sydney fame) has made a study in myth-busting that contemplates, among other things, colonisation, migration, resistance, religion and war. Preserved tattooed heads, rugged coastlines and biblical excerpts populate his paintings and as dark storm clouds collect, a sick sense of foreboding creeps up the walls at Anna Schwartz Gallery.

Electric Empire

As the production/songwriting/performing brainchild of Dennis Dowlut, the man’s persistence in crafting music with such feel and sincerity is wonderfully admirable given the loss of brother and musical partner Darren to cancer in 2005. With a new sound, a new scene and a newly soulful lease on life, Electric Empire is certainly the sunshine after the rain, and my what rays it casts.

Creating the Look: Benini and Fashion Photography

Some Benini photographs have iconic staying power (a gun-toting, shoe-stroking model in niqab, for one), while others pluck at pedestrian ’50s nostalgia. They invariably drip with glamour even when advertising mere Sportscraft dresses and Wittner shoes and work a charm even now.

Oh Mercy 7” Single Launch

Oh Mercy flirt with your emotions; one minute their songs are jovial, full of rhythm and layers of pop friendly lyrics and the next they are edged with salty salutations and moody stoicism. Adept and sincere the band harmonizes into one and is both bold and memorable.

“They’re delicately textured songs that invite comparisons with The Kinks at their most introspective, but more potently the airy, folky music of Belle & Sebastian – exquisitely literate and lyrical yet never pretentious, unconfronting yet uniformly appealing.” 4 Stars Herald-Sun

Disorder Disorder: Ulterior Motives in Contemporary Art (Exhibition)

An album cover design, an illegal wall mural, a collectable toy, a skateboard, a gig poster, a photocopied zine, photos from a fashion shoot or a shoebox full of photos at a flea market. They’re all equally awesome, right?

Disorder Disorder features artists who don’t so much ignore the lines between commercial and fine art, amateur and professional, or highbrow and low. They simply never adopted those distinctions to begin with.

AMYGDALA – Fear Conditioning (Exhibition)

A collection of live performance video projections, multiplied into a distorted archive. Sense is derived through devolution in a media echo chamber with artifice layered upon artifice.

This expression is similar to the human amygdala – the component of the brain that deals with memory and emotion, and is associated with fear-conditioning.

The Nothing Men (Aussie Film)

Producer and co-star Martin Dingle Wall calls The Nothing Men “a rusty nail, one inch punch of a film,” and there’s honestly no better way to describe it. Set in a dingy factory in the final two weeks before it gets shut down for good, the story sits with the erstwhile workers as they are forced to wait on their redundancy payouts.

With cards, beers and a midday visit from the lunch truck their only entertainment, former foreman Jack (Colin Friels) and his men fritter their days away with the crassest forms of ’secret men’s business’. That is until mild-mannered David (David Field) arrives and his last minute transfer is enough to turn Jack’s corporate conspiracy theories into full-blown, deadly paranoia.

Lanfranchi’s Memorial Discotheque + Qanda (Screening)

Alas, Lanfranchi’s — that pinnacle of artistic endeavor — has left the building. The infamous space on the second story of an inner city warehouse was forced, like many others, to close its doors due to development interests. Luckily for us, filmmaker Richard Baron took initiative just in time and documented the last sixty days of Lanfranchi’s existence.

What was initially intended to be a short film has transformed into an hour long extravaganza, splicing together Baron’s footage with archival footage captured by punters. The film’s debut also involves a QandA with Baron, David Harris (co-founder of Lanfranchi’s) and Phoebe Torzillo (a long-term resident of the space). The whole shebang will be hosted by Jaimie Leonarder of Mu-Meson Archives.

A Ciel Ouvert (Exhibition)

William-Guillame Saussay’s big, energetic, squiggle-circuits are very 80s New York. Like abstract cityscapes seen from above, their palette oscillates between energetic and virulent, and the flashes of text that are scrambled into the canvases refer to advertising and media saturated environments as well as the evident graffiti influences.

Online Video Advertising: The Next Decade (Forum)

It’s been ten years since the world was first introduced to the online Instant Play Video Ad. Since then, the use of video in online advertising has exploded as it has been proven time and again to increase advertising effectiveness across all categories: message association, brand awareness, brand favourability and even direct response.

As we start the second decade, what is the current state of the art for video in in-page, in-banner and in-stream advertising? How does interactivity in each deliver more compelling experiences for users and better results for advertisers? And what can advertisers, agencies and publishers expect for the next decade?

Join us as we answer these questions and explore the innovation, creative opportunities and upcoming potential as we push in to online video advertising’s second decade.

Don’t Tell Nanna (Exhibition)

All the works in the show play with ideas of the feminine and the domestic in their imagery, materials and techniques. There’s a real sense that this stuff “for girls” is being used by the artists to express personal identity at the same time as being very obviously conscious of the connotations of their repertoire.

It’s a little bit like a sleepover, really: there are in-jokes, secrets being whispered about, music, dressing-up and sequins. But there are also political undercurrents and things going on that might just help you to grow up.

Hijacked 2

To be frank, that doesn’t always work. Hijacked relies heavily on social networking and young photographers for its material, and the venue hails the show’s resultant focus on “the young, the boundary-riding and the fringe dwelling”. In more than a few places this devolves into some pretty grating portraiture of photographers friends’ homemade tattoos, detached irony and comfort with partial nudity. Edgy.

Songs are for sad, painting are for happy, Craig Dermody (Exhibition opening)

Craig Dermody likes to paint chintzy op-shop style landscapes and stale pastoral backdrops. Now, when I say ‘paint’ I mean that he gets to indulge every child’s destructive fantasy by painting witches, monsters, giant octopi and various other cool shit right over the top of these otherwise lifeless renderings. Songs are for sad, paintings are for happy comprises a selection of works he produced as potential album covers for his band Scott and Charlene’s wedding, who will also perform on opening night. This one is pure stoner reverie.

Unreal Rock (Photography Exhibition)

Usually published under the name Jacques L’Affrique, David Porter worked in the 1970s as a Melbourne-based rock music photojournalist for publications such as Go-Set, recording almost every great concert from 1971 until 1974. With daring and skill L’Affrique/ Porter captured what are now iconic images of Australia cultural history. Exploiting shadow and light/dark contrasts, his compositions are intriguing – sometimes complex, sometimes boldly simple.

L’Affrique/ Porter’s portraits of Elton John, Jethro Tull, Johnny Farnham and Billy Thorpe crisply capture the essence and magic of his now legendary subjects.
