A Man Called Love (Exhibition)

Tamar Guimarães’s fascinating and poetic slide-work, A Man Called Love (2007), tells the true story of Francisco Candido Xavier (1910–2002), a Brazilian psychic medium who dedicated his life to writing down the words spoken to him by the dead. The most prolific psychographer of all time, he wrote over 400 books. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was a celebrity in Brazil, drawing large crowds whenever he appeared in public.

A Man Called Love makes use of archival images of Xavier, of spirit materialisations produced in the 1930 and 1940s in Brazil, of Rio and Sao Paulo, and of protests against the military regime in the late 1960s.

Leaves out of the Book of Satan (Film Screening)

Just like Mozart had Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Van Gogh had Sunflowers and Brittany had her shaved head, filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer had Leaves Out Of The Book Of Satan. A multistoried film presenting the power of evil through the ages, that took a humble local-talent to an internationally recognised director. Dreyer’s visual scenes are both addictive and intolerable, but completely necessary considering the films silent nature.

Covers by Cybele Malinowski and Daniel Boud (Photography Exhibition)

Between them, this couple have probably snapped every musician to arrive on our shores, and if you’ve ever picked up a copy of Drum, Brag, 3D World, JMag or Time Out, you have in all likelihood seen what a bang up job they do of it.

Drop by and you’ll find a careful selection of their favourite covers displayed as they actually appeared on magazine racks, only much bigger. They’re for sale too, with all profits going to the Oasis foundation a Surry Hills charity that organises housing, education and drug and alcohol programs for homeless and disadvantaged kids.

Account Planning Group Idea Exchange

MD of Goodby Silverstein, Derek Robson, kicks off the Ideas Exchange program for 2010 with his thoughts on ‘Agency Change – The Role That Planning Should Play’.

Derek spent 13 years at Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH) moving from Planner to Deputy Planning Director and finally, Managing Director. Under his leadership the Agency twice won Campaign Magazine’s Agency of the year award and the Agency grew its income by 30%.

Off the back of this success, Derek was recruited to join Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in 2005, with a specific remit; to reposition the agency for the future. His strategic vision has been credited for transforming the agency from traditional creative shop (think ‘Got Milk’ campaign) to multiplatform creative agency.
